Support for ANGOA Charities Bill submission - add your voice before February 29

Whether you are a registered charity in New Zealand or not, Development Action encourages you to add your support for a recent submission by ANGOA (Association of Non-Governmental Organisations of Aotearoa) related to a proposed absorbtion of the Charities Commission into the Department of Internal Affairs.

ANGOA's submission outlines the historical reasons for constructing the Charities Commission as an Autonomous Crown Entity, allowing it to operate outside of ministerial influence. It also highlights the support for the opinions expressed in the submission following a lengthy and nation-wide consultation process. Download a copy of the submission here.

In short, ANGOA requests that:

The Commission should not be absorbed into DIA, at least until the review is complete

The review should be brought forward, and accelerated.

If you agree with ANGOA's submission, please state so in a letter addressed to the Chair of the Government Administration Select Committee, Hon Ruth Dyson, Parliament Buildings, Wellington, by February 28. The Select Committee is scheduled to report back to Parliament on the 29th.

Questions and comments related to the draft submission should be made to Dave Henderson, ANGOA Co-ordinator.

Development Action thanks ANGOA for this important work.

2012 training programme currently taking orders

The Development Action team has been working over the summer break on our 2012 training programme. As always, we are keen to hear your views and ideas regarding training, professional development or significant events that you think would benefit the community and voluntary sector in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Workshops we are currently designing:

Better than Surviving: adapting your community organisation to the “new” New Zealand - 7 March, Wellington only.
Four speakers will lead discussion on a range of key strategic knowledge themes:

Anna Kominik (Ideas Shop) - up to date analysis of the operating environment for organisations post-election.

Bert Aldridge - strategic tools to help make a funding and relationship approach to private sector companies.

James King - mythbusting the New Zealand operating environment. What do Kiwis really think of the sector and how do they interact with it?

Sue Cooper (Prometheus Bank) - exploring opportunities for social enterprise within your organisation.

Fostering Community Leadership: (sounds great... but what does it mean?) - April, date TBC, Wellington and Auckland
Many organisations and government bodies are tasked with identifying, building, supporting or creating community leaders. But how is “leadership” being defined, is it possible to create leaders, and if so, how do organisations know when their efforts have been successful?

Organisational development two day workshop with Allan Kaplan and Sue Davidoff - June, date and location TBC
Following on from our successful Beyond Management workshop last year, Development Action is hoping to host Allan and Sue for a more intensive two day workshop. Discussions are underway, so watch this space.

Also, if you feel you have a unique method for community engagement and would like to work with us to design a one-day training session, we would like to hear from you. It's a great way to share what you know with the sector and recover some of the expenses of designing the method.

Feel free to contact us and share your thoughts.
